Performs pharmacy related functions such as preparation and distribution of regular and chemotherapy drugs and intravenous admixtures. Assumes responsibility for replenishment of stock in the automated dispensing machines.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
1. Assists pharmacist in entering medication orders into the pharmacy computer system.
2. Manufactures and fills stocks in the pharmacy automated dispensing machines.
3. Assists in preparation of sterile products.
4. Assists in the preparation of chemotherapy drugs. Reconstitutes bulk additives and prepares batches of selected admixtures.
5. Checks work of junior pharmacy assistant to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
6. Assists pharmacists in filling pharmacy requisitions, canisters fillings and in maintaining records.
7. Pre-packages tablets and capsules using an automatic unit dose or tablet/capsule counting machine. Follows worksheet to prepare products. Labels the pre-packaged product and completes appropriate records.
8. Distributes filled orders to nursing units or other departments as required.
9. Maintains proper inventory of drugs and supplies. Monitors expiration dates. Prepares expired medications for disposal through electronic system.
10. Performs monthly nursing unit inspection, maintain workload records, and collect quality assurance data.
11. Maintains a clean working environment including hoods and counter tops.
12. Assists in giving training to new pharmacy assistants.
13. Follows all hospital related policies and procedures.
14. Participates in self and others’ professional development.
Education
Diploma in Pharmacy Technician/ Assistant from an accredited college of Health Sciences or institution is required.
Experience Required
Four (4) years of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant in a hospital pharmacy required.
