Roles and Responsibilities
carrying out marine ecology surveys as part of environmental impact assessments
• scuba diving to survey and identify benthic forms
• conducting species inventories, testing and monitoring sea creatures
• collecting samples and data-using processes such as coring techniques, geographic information systems (GIS), visual recording and sampling
• preserving specimens and samples and mapping the distribution, ranges or movements of marine populations
• artificial reef development and monitoring
• designing scientific experiments and collating findings
• preparing detailed reports
• interviewing local divers, fisherman and stakeholders about animal behaviour and local marine practices
• lecturing or teaching on policy, planning and management of marine activities
• developing, implementing and managing projects relating to the marine environment
• coordinating and tracking of assignments, scopes, schedules budgets and deliverable
Desired Candidate Profile
An Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in Marine Ecology or Environmental Science and a minimum of 2 years of progressive field sampling experience; for those without a degree in science, a minimum of 5 years of field sampling experience is required;
A marine-focused degree such as the following, will be preferred:
• marine biology
• marine biology and coastal ecology/oceanography
• marine science
• ocean and earth science
• oceanography.
